Tennei-ji, Buddhist temple in Aizuwakamatsu, Japan.
Tennei-ji is a Buddhist temple situated on a hillside with traditional wooden structures and carefully maintained gardens. The grounds display the hallmarks of Sōtō Zen architecture with multiple buildings and a peaceful layout.
The temple was founded in 1447 by Ashina Morinobu and played an important role in the religious development of the Aizu region. Its history is closely tied to the stabilization and growth of the area in Fukushima.
Regular Zazen meditation sessions take place at the temple every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday morning, continuing the practices of Sōtō Zen Buddhism.
Visitors should register two days in advance to participate in meditation sessions. The best time to explore the grounds is on quieter weekdays when fewer people are present.
The temple grounds are part of a roughly two-kilometer walking route connecting several religious sites in the area. This path allows visitors to experience multiple spiritual locations on a single outing.
