Sibazakura Park, Public park in Shibacho, Japan
Sibazakura Park is a public garden in Shibacho featuring ground coverage of pink moss phlox flowers that blanket the terrain in spring, creating dense layers of red, white, and pink blooms. The grounds can be accessed via stairways or a tram system, with elevated viewing platforms offering vistas across the entire floral display.
A local resident began transforming the area in 1977 by planting pink moss phlox seedlings, dedicating eight years to establishing the foundation of what exists today. This individual effort created the garden that visitors encounter, shaping its development and character.
The Yamatsumi Shrine within the grounds was established in 1913 and honors the mountain deity Oyamatsumi, where visitors come to offer prayers for good harvests, business prosperity, and safe journeys. This sacred space blends religious devotion with the surrounding flower displays, creating a place where spirituality and nature coexist.
Spring offers the ideal timing for a visit, as the flowers reach peak bloom and colors appear most vibrant. Stairway access requires moderate physical effort, while the tram provides a more comfortable alternative for those preferring easier movement.
The gardens are maintained without pesticides or chemicals, preserving the traditional cultivation method established by the original caretaker. This natural management approach protects both plant health and the historical connection to how the garden was first shaped.
