Hirabayashi Castle, Historical castle site in Murakami, Japan
The castle ruins stand on Mount Yogai, a 200-meter hill near the Arakawa River mouth at the northern edge of the Echigo Plain.
Built around 1500, the castle changed hands from the Hirabayashi clan to the Irobe clan during the Nanboku-cho period of Japanese feudal history.
The archaeological remains include multiple kuruwa defensive circles, earthwork formations, moat systems, and water wells that demonstrate medieval Japanese fortification methods.
The castle site, designated as a National Historic Site since 1978, requires a 30-minute walk from Murakami Station on the JR East Uetsu Line.
Located more than 200 kilometers from the provincial capital of Echigo Province, this remote fortress served as a crucial control point for the Agakitashu lords.
