Jion Falls

Jion Falls is a two-stage waterfall in Kusu-machi with an upper section dropping 20 meters and a lower section extending 10 meters. The water cascades dramatically over both levels, creating a striking natural display that draws visitors throughout the year.

According to local tradition, a Buddhist priest subdued a large serpent dwelling in the waterfall by reciting sacred sutras. This narrative has shaped the spiritual character of this place through the centuries.

The waterfall sits in Kusu Town, an area throughout Japan known for its fairy tales and local legends. Visitors can sense the connection between this natural setting and the stories that shape the region's identity.

The drive takes about 15 minutes from the Amase-Takatsuka Interchange on the Oita Expressway. Parking is available for around 12 vehicles, so arriving early or visiting on quieter days helps avoid wait times.

The waterfall is illuminated at night, creating a different visual experience from daytime viewing. This nighttime lighting transforms the natural landscape in unexpected ways and draws visitors who want to experience it after dark.
