Kusu, Mountain town in Kusu District, Japan.
Kusu is a town in the Kusu District of Oita Prefecture, spreading across forested mountain terrain in the Kyushu range. The area borders Kumamoto Prefecture and features valleys and elevated ridges typical of the region.
The town grew from the village of Mannen in 1889 and received official town status in 1927. A major merger took place in 1955 when the neighboring town of Mori was incorporated.
The town maintains Japanese traditions through local festivals, while its architecture presents traditional wooden structures alongside contemporary buildings.
The town is reached by the Kyudai Main Line railway and major road routes through the mountains. National Routes 210 and 387 provide the main access points for those arriving by car or bus.
The northern area contains the Hiseidai Training Range, one of the largest military facilities of Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force in the western part of the country. This presence shapes the region's infrastructure and local economy.
