Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward

The Old Public Hall combines Western architectural elements with a Japanese foundation, featuring gray-blue and yellow exterior walls and period-specific interior furnishings.

Built in September 1910 following the Great Hakodate Fire of 1907, this municipal hall replaced the burned town assembly and chamber of commerce buildings.

The structure represents Giyofu architecture, a nineteenth-century style that incorporates Western design elements into traditional Japanese construction methods.

The hall opens from 9 AM to 6 PM during summer months and until 5 PM in winter, with admission fees of 300 yen for adults and 150 yen for students.

The 2021 restoration project reinstated original Meiji period linoleum patterns on the second floor grand hall, maintaining historical accuracy.
