Hongan-ji Tsumura Betsuin

Hongan-ji Tsumura Betsuin is a Buddhist temple in the Tsumura district of Osaka featuring a modern concrete main hall built in 1964. The grounds blend contemporary architecture with traditional Japanese garden design.

The temple was founded in 1597 and eventually relocated from its original location in the Temma area to the Tsumura district. This move reflected broader changes in how the city was organized and developed.

The temple plays an active role in the local community through musical performances and educational initiatives, with a recognizable mascot character that reflects its integration into everyday life.

The temple is easily reached on foot from Honmachi Station via the Midosuji subway line connecting from central Osaka. The entrance is located just to the left of exit 2 at the station.

The name Midosuji Avenue, one of Osaka's main thoroughfares, comes from a historical connection between this temple and the Namba Betsuin temple to the south. This reveals how these two religious sites shaped the city's layout.
