Honmyō-ji

Honmyō-ji Temple covers a large area in Sugamo district, featuring traditional Japanese temple architecture with a main hall and bell tower.

Founded in 1571 by samurai serving Tokugawa Ieyasu, the temple moved to its current location in Sugamo between 1908 and 1911.

The temple grounds contain graves of notable figures, including Kinshiro Tohyama, who inspired the character in television series about Edo period law enforcement.

Located at 5-35-6 Sugamo in Toshima ward, the temple offers handwritten calligraphy stamps to visitors at the temple office next to the main hall.

During the 1945 Tokyo air raids, the main hall survived thanks to an air raid shelter, while most other structures were destroyed.
