Paper Museum, Paper museum in Asukayama Park, Japan
The Paper Museum sits within Asukayama Park and occupies four floors displaying the papermaking journey from raw materials to finished sheets. Exhibits cover both traditional Japanese techniques and Western industrial methods that shaped the craft.
The museum was founded in 1950 at the site of one of Japan's earliest Western-style paper mills. It later relocated to its present location within the park.
The third floor displays washi in many regional varieties, showing how traditional papermaking reflects different local approaches across Japan. Visitors notice how the methods and styles vary from one area to another.
The museum sits about five minutes on foot from Oji Station, making it easy to reach by train. Once inside, clear signage helps you navigate through the four floors at your own pace.
Visitors can join workshops to make their own paper from recycled materials like milk cartons under guidance. This hands-on experience gives you a feel for how labor-intensive the craft truly is.
