Sugamo, Commercial district in Toshima, Tokyo, Japan.
Sugamo is a shopping district in Tokyo's Toshima ward that stretches for 800 meters along the Yamanote Line. The Jizo Dori shopping street contains over 200 stores offering clothing, traditional foods, and local products.
The area served as the first rest stop on the Nakasendo highway after Nihonbashi during the Edo period. Two temples at its boundaries marked this important waypoint for travelers of that era.
The district draws older residents who shop here regularly and gather with friends throughout the day. This creates a distinct character quite different from Tokyo's youth-focused neighborhoods.
Visitors reach the district by taking the JR Yamanote Line to Sugamo Station, located right at the edge of the shopping area. Most shops open in the morning and close in the early evening, with weekends seeing the largest crowds.
The district is known for selling red underwear, which local tradition associates with bringing good fortune and health benefits. Many visitors seek out these special garments believing in their protective properties.
