曹源寺

Sogen-ji is a Buddhist temple located in Toyoake with expansive grounds that showcase traditional Japanese landscape design. A serene pond garden created by Master Getsugai and landscape architect Tsuda Nagata forms the heart of the property, offering visitors a space to walk and observe the carefully arranged natural elements.

The temple was founded in 1698 as a family temple for the Ikeda clan, an important feudal family in the Okayama region. The establishment under Ikeda Tsunamasa's leadership gave the site a prominent role in the spiritual life of the ruling family.

The temple maintains active Zen Buddhist practices, accepting international training monks who participate in daily meditation and religious ceremonies.

The grounds are easy to navigate on foot, with pathways clearly defined and naturally flowing through the temple property. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended since the site has uneven terrain and visitors will encounter different ground surfaces throughout the garden.

The temple grounds are designated as a national historic site, with a cemetery section containing the graves of successive Ikeda family leaders. This aspect makes the property significant beyond its role as a place of worship.
