Katsurahama Aquarium

Katsurahama Aquarium sits on the shore of Katsurahama Park, where you can see marine life in tanks and watch animal performances. The facility overlooks Tosa Bay and displays various species adapted to these coastal waters.

It first opened as Oranku Aquarium in April 1931 and became a lasting center for marine education in Kochi Prefecture. Over the decades, it has continued to evolve and expand its collections to draw new visitors.

Staff members here lead educational demonstrations and sign autographs for visitors, creating a direct connection between guests and the people who care for the animals. This hands-on interaction helps visitors feel closer to the marine life they see.

You can reach the aquarium by taking a Tosaden Traffic bus from JR Kochi Station, which takes about 40 minutes to reach the Katsurahama bus stop. Allow plenty of time to explore the exhibits and watch the animal shows at your own pace.

The facility houses Japan's largest collection of Japanese lates, small fish with red eyes that glow under specialized lighting. This distinctive feature makes watching these fish a memorable experience.
