Shiranoe Botanical Gardens, Botanical garden in Moji-ku, Kitakyushu, Japan
Shiranoe Botanical Gardens sits on a hillside overlooking the Suo-nada Sea and covers roughly 8 hectares with diverse plant collections. The site offers landscaped walking paths that guide visitors through different areas planted with various species.
The site was founded in 1952 as a private garden called Four Seasons Hill and was purchased by Kitakyushu City in 1993. It reopened to the public in 1996 as a botanical garden.
The garden uses traditional Japanese landscaping design and displays over 60 different cherry tree varieties, including a 400-year-old Sato-zakura tree. This ancient cherry is a protected natural monument and draws visitors who come to see these special trees.
The best time to visit is during bloom seasons when the different planted zones are at their fullest. The paths are paved and easy to walk, making the grounds accessible for most visitors.
The garden divides into specialized zones including a peony area, azalea section, wetland zone, and deciduous woodland. These separate areas rotate seasonal plant displays throughout the year.
