Kotozuka Kofun

Kotozuka Kofun, Archaeological burial mound in Gifu, Japan

Kotozuka Kofun is an ancient burial mound with a distinctive keyhole shape that connects a rectangular section to a circular one. The entire structure demonstrates the characteristic design typical of monumental tombs from this period.

This burial mound was constructed in the mid-4th century during a period when regional leaders displayed their power through monumental building. The construction reflects a specific phase in the development of tomb architecture.

The site bears the name Kotozuka, referring to the family buried at this location. Visitors today can observe the mound's shape and grasp how such tombs reflected the authority of ancient leaders.

The grounds are now open as a public park with marked pathways allowing visitors to walk around the different sections. Information boards along the routes explain the structure and archaeological findings on site.

Excavations revealed iron swords, jade objects, and painted clay vessels that shed light on burial practices of the time. These findings suggest the deceased was sent to the afterlife with valuable and symbolic items.
