Yurijima, Island in Matsuyama, Japan
Yurijima is a small island within the Kutsuna group located in the western Seto Inland Sea and administratively part of Matsuyama. The shoreline shows rocky formations and green slopes, while a few houses and paths mark the interior.
The island served for centuries as a stopping point for vessels traveling along the Inland Sea routes between larger ports. Fishermen and small communities settled here and used the sheltered coves for anchorage.
Sacred trees across Yurijima remain protected by local customs and Shinto beliefs, with residents maintaining strict rules about their preservation for generations.
Ferry services link the island to the mainland with several departures daily, and the crossing takes roughly half an hour. Paths on the island are narrow and sometimes steep, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
The island hosts an elementary and a middle school that continue to teach children from the resident families. These facilities are unusual for many smaller islands in the region and show that a stable community life still exists here.
