禅昌寺

Zenchoji is a Buddhist temple complex featuring a five-story pagoda that has been designated as a national treasure. The grounds include a bell tower, storehouses, and a museum that documents the architectural significance of the pagoda and its construction.

Construction of the temple began in 1442, establishing it as an important religious center in the region. Over time, the five-story pagoda gained recognition as one of the three most significant examples of its kind in Japan.

The temple grounds serve as a burial site that reflects the devotion of regional leaders who shaped the area's history. Walking through the burial areas today, visitors gain insight into how prominent families expressed their religious beliefs through their choice of this sacred place.

The temple is located north of Yamaguchi's main station and is easily reached by local transportation or walking. Entry to the grounds is free, though visitors who wish to view the museum exhibits will need to purchase a small admission fee.

A special stone pavement on the grounds produces bird-like sounds when people walk across it. This acoustic feature results from traditional construction techniques and creates a surprising musical experience for visitors as they move through the temple area.
