Rengeji-ike Park, Public park and historic pond in Fujieda, Japan
Rengeji-ike Park is a public park in Fujieda built around a large central pond with walking paths that wind through the grounds. The space includes children's play equipment with colored slides, an outdoor music pavilion, boat rental facilities, and a coffee shop where visitors can sit and look out over the water.
The pond at the center was constructed in 1613 as an irrigation reservoir during the early Edo period and named after the nearby Rengeji Temple. Over time it transitioned from a practical agricultural structure into a recreational space that now serves the community.
The park becomes a gathering place during the Wisteria Festival in late April and again in early August when the fireworks light up the pond and surrounding grounds. Locals and visitors use these moments to celebrate seasonal changes and connect with the place throughout the year.
The park is accessible throughout the year with plenty of space to walk and explore around the pond. Wear good walking shoes as the paths can be uneven or wet, especially after rain or during rainy seasons.
The park preserves the Wakaoji ancient burial mounds, with around 30 tombs designated as protected historical sites by Shizuoka Prefecture. These archaeological remains from early periods are woven into the modern park design.
