Awakokubun-ji, Buddhist temple in Tokushima, Japan
The temple features a main hall constructed in the early 19th century and includes traditional architectural elements representing Japanese Buddhist design principles.
Emperor Shomu established this temple in 741 as part of a network of 68 provincial temples across Japan to create a unified state based on Chinese governance.
Awakokubun-ji stands as the fifteenth temple along the 88-temple Shikoku Pilgrimage route, marking an essential point for Buddhist practitioners and visitors.
Visitors can reach the temple by taking a bus from Tokushima Station to Kokubunji-mae stop, followed by a ten-minute walk to the entrance.
The temple houses a statue of Yakushi Nyorai carved by monk Gyoki in 741, which continues to serve as the main object of worship.
