Suga Shrine, Shinto shrine in Sugachō, Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan.
Suga Shrine is a Shinto shrine in Sugachō, Shinjuku, entered through a salmon-pink torii with a dark plaque bearing gold characters and a braided rope with white streamers. Behind it stands a hall with a green-copper gabled roof and a column-framed doorway.
The shrine has stood in this area since around 1634, when it was moved here during the construction of the outer moat around Edo Castle, and it has remained a spiritual home for the local community through centuries of change in the city.
People come here to pray to Susanoo and Ukanomitama, two protective deities believed to bring good health, business success, and love, and the shrine plays a role in local festivals when the grounds fill with music, lanterns, and joyful celebrations.
Suga Shrine is about a 6-minute walk from exit 3 of Yotsuya-Sanchome Station on the Marunouchi Line, or about 12 minutes on foot from JR and subway Yotsuya Station. The grounds sit in Sugacho, Shinjuku, and the staircase featured in Your Name is on the premises.
The staircase on the shrine grounds appears in the closing scene of the 2016 anime film Your Name, where the two protagonists reunite; promotional posters used it as a key visual. Fans photograph the steps and leave ema wooden plaques with wishes at the shrine.
