King Skyfront, Research and innovation district in Kawasaki, Japan
King Skyfront is a research and business district in Kawasaki, Japan, located directly next to Haneda Airport and focused on medical, environmental, and technology development. The area is made up of office buildings, laboratories, and shared facilities used by a large number of companies and research institutions.
The site was originally home to a car factory that opened in 1938 and operated for many decades as an industrial hub. In 2011 it was designated as an International Strategic Zone and transformed into the research and business district it is today.
The area is home to the Kanagawa Philharmonic Symphony Hall, where concerts are regularly held alongside daily office life. A nearby gallery displays woodblock prints from the Edo period, making traditional Japanese art part of the everyday landscape of a modern research district.
A bridge that opened in 2022 connects the district directly to Haneda Airport, making it easy to reach without going through the city. The area is well signposted and laid out in a clear way, so getting around on foot during a first visit is straightforward.
The name King Skyfront is built from an acronym: the letters stand for Kawasaki Innovation Gateway, and Skyfront points to the location right next to the airport. The word Gateway was chosen deliberately to signal an international purpose, not just a physical position.
