Mori Butai

Mori Butai is a theatre and art museum in Tome with exhibition spaces and a performance stage for classical Japanese theatre. Architect Kengo Kuma blended traditional Japanese design elements with contemporary construction, creating spaces that honour both the old and new.

The building was completed in 1996 and received the Architectural Institute of Japan Prize for its outstanding design. This recognition honoured its contribution to preserving Japanese theatre traditions in Miyagi Prefecture.

Regular performances here introduce visitors to the refined movements and techniques of Noh theatre, a classical form central to Japanese artistic life. The spaces are designed so that audiences sit close to the action, creating an immediate connection to this traditional art form.

The venue is easily accessible and offers visitors the chance to watch performances or join workshops. It helps to check the schedule in advance, as shows happen at different times throughout the year.

The building uses natural materials and deliberately connects the indoor stage with the outdoor surroundings. This creates special moments during performances when nature and art come together directly.
