木下貝層, Fossil shell bed in Inzai, Japan
Kinoshita Shell Formation is an extensive layer of marine fossils stretching about 45 meters long and roughly 4 meters thick. It reveals over 100 species of ancient sea creatures that were preserved in sediment.
The layer formed between around 450,000 and 80,000 years ago when shallow marine waters covered the ancient Tokyo Bay region. This setting left behind remains of sea life that gradually turned to stone.
The hardened shells were used historically for building tombs and stone ornaments in the area.
The site is accessible through Kinoshita Manyo Park, where the layers are protected and can be viewed under conservation rules. Wear sturdy footwear and follow guidelines to help protect the fossils.
The formation is divided into four distinct zones, each representing different marine environments at various times. This division shows how water conditions changed over thousands of years.
