木下貝層, Fossil shell bed in Inzai, Japan

The Kinoshita Shell Formation contains over 100 species of marine fossils within a 45-meter long and 4.3-meter thick exposed layer.

The formation accumulated between 450,000 and 80,000 years ago in the ancient Tokyo Bay, when the area was covered by shallow marine waters.

The hardened shell layers were traditionally used as construction materials for ancient tomb chambers and stone lanterns throughout the Inzai region.

The formation is accessible through Kinoshita Manyo Park, where visitors can observe the exposed fossil beds under protection regulations.

The layers contain four distinct fossil zones, including the Ostrea denselamellosa zone and the Scaphechinus mirabilis zone, indicating different marine environments.
