Haedong Yonggungsa, Buddhist temple in Gijang County, South Korea

Haedong Yonggungsa is a temple perched on a cliff overlooking the East Sea, featuring multiple pagodas, statues, stone lanterns, and ornate gates framed by the ocean. The complex blends traditional Buddhist architecture with a dramatic seaside setting.

Monk Naong Hyewon founded Haedong Yonggungsa in 1376 during the Goryeo Dynasty as a small hermitage. The original structure grew over centuries into the present-day extensive complex.

The main hall holds an Avalokiteshvara statue where visitors perform rituals and prayers for good fortune, particularly during sunrise celebrations on the lunar new year.

The path to the temple descends via 108 stone steps through landscaped gardens with photo spots and rest areas along the way. Wear comfortable shoes since the stairs are steep and continuous.

Unlike most Korean temples situated in mountains, this seaside location integrates the sound of crashing waves into daily meditation practices. The salt air and ocean sounds create a sensory experience that sets the place apart.
