The Daegu Opera House is an opera house in the Buk-gu district of Daegu, South Korea, built across four main floors and two basement levels. The building has a main auditorium alongside smaller performance spaces, all housed within a reinforced concrete and steel truss structure.
Construction started in 2000 and the building opened in 2003, making Daegu one of the few South Korean cities outside Seoul with a dedicated opera house. Since then it has steadily grown its programming and expanded the range of performance formats it offers.
The opera house draws audiences from across the Gyeongsang region and serves as the main stage for the city's performing arts scene. Its lobby often features displays connected to ongoing productions, giving visitors something to look at even before the curtain rises.
The building has both underground and outdoor parking, making it easy to arrive by car. Visiting in the evening is a good idea, as the forecourt comes alive before performances and the lit entrance makes the space easy to navigate.
The annual Daegu International Opera Festival, held at this venue, is one of the few opera festivals in Asia that focuses exclusively on the opera format, without mixing in musicals or theater productions. Singers from Europe and the United States regularly appear alongside Korean ensembles.
