Construction of the church began in 1780 through community contributions, reaching completion in 1822 under the guidance of architect Augustinas Kosakauskas.
The basilica holds regular Catholic services and receives numerous pilgrims during Marian holidays, maintaining its position as a central religious site in Lithuania.
Visitors can reach the basilica at Vienuolyno Street 1A in Žemaičių Kalvarija, with guided tours available by contacting the church office at +370 674 20 400.
Pope John Paul II designated this church as a basilica in 1988, and in 2006, Pope Benedict XVI crowned its miraculous painting of the Mother of God with Child.
