Brandenbourg Castle, Medieval castle in Brandenbourg, Luxembourg
Brandenbourg Castle is a medieval fortress perched on a hilltop above the village of Tandel, composed of several structures surrounding a fortified courtyard. The site displays typical features of a defensive stronghold with stone walls and preserved towers from different periods.
The fortress began as a wooden structure in the 9th century and gained its stone keep during the 13th century. Through the following centuries it was expanded several times until reaching its present form in the 16th century.
The castle served as a residence for several noble families who shaped the region over time. The stone walls and towers today reflect how central this place was to local life and power.
The grounds are open to visitors from April through October, while winter closures protect the site during harsher weather. Wear sturdy shoes for the walk up, as the path is steep and the terrain can be uneven.
The keep preserves three of its original four floors and from its top offers views over the crossroads connecting river valleys and highlands. This position was vital for controlling trade routes in the region.
