Andrejsala, Industrial port district in Riga, Latvia
Andrejsala is a former industrial district along the Daugava River in Riga that extends along the port and now houses residential buildings, art spaces, and businesses. The area combines port functions with new uses and shows a mixture of preserved industrial structures and modern developments.
The area developed from the 13th century as a trading zone when Riga joined the Hanseatic League and its importance as a port city grew. In the 20th century it became an important industrial port before undergoing transformation into a mixed urban space in recent decades.
The district has transformed from a purely industrial zone into a living arts hub where galleries, workshops, and venues now operate alongside each other. Artists and creative professionals use the former warehouses and open spaces for regular exhibitions and cultural events.
The neighborhood is easily accessible by public transport and offers walking paths for exploring the waterfront. The best time to visit is during warmer months when outdoor activities and events take place.
The area was long primarily a cargo handling zone and it is worth paying attention to traces of this past. Between the new art spaces you can still find parts of old port cranes and warehouses that tell of that era.
