Сад Коюсала, Urban park in Latgales, Riga, Latvia
Kojusalas Garden is an urban green space spanning about 6 hectares in Latgales with walking paths, benches, and rest areas along the Daugava River. The park is divided into different sections that invite both casual strolls and quiet moments of sitting.
The garden was established in 1937 by landscape architect Andrey Zeidak on land that was once part of Kojusala Island. This territory held military importance in the 1700s when it served as a defensive position during conflicts affecting the city.
This space serves as a neighborhood gathering spot where locals walk, relax on benches, and watch the river flow by. On weekends, community events and small markets draw residents together in this familiar corner of their district.
The park is located between several streets and connected by public transit routes that serve the area well. The open layout makes it easy to enter from multiple points and explore at your own pace without feeling constrained.
An old water channel called Kojusalas grāvis is still visible today, marking where this land was once completely surrounded by the river. This physical trace reminds visitors of how the Daugava's course and the landscape have shifted over time.
