Volkenberga Castle ruins, Medieval castle ruins in Mākoņkalns Parish, Latvia
Volkenberga Castle is a ruin located on a hill rising above the southern shore of Lake Rāzna. Stone walls remain visible, with fragments of underground passages discernible beneath the vegetation.
The fortress was built around 1250 and served as a Teutonic commandry under Commander Dietrich. In 1277, operations relocated to Dünaburg Castle nearby.
The ruins show early medieval military design that visitors can examine in the remaining walls. One can see how builders chose large stones to create strong structures.
The climb to the ruins follows steep stairs with handrails on a marked path. Information boards along the way explain the features and history of this location.
The walls contain embedded fieldstones over one meter in diameter, showing the robust construction approach. These large stones remain clearly visible in the ruins today.
