Rāzna National Park, National park in Latgale region, Latvia.
Rāzna National Park is a protected area in eastern Latvia built around Lake Rāzna, the country's second largest lake. The park covers forests, meadows, wetlands, and the lake itself, which holds several wooded islands scattered across its surface.
Concern over the declining condition of Lake Rāzna led to the area being placed under protection in the late 1980s. The park was formally established shortly after, and its boundaries were drawn to cover the lake and the surrounding land.
The park sits at the heart of Latgale, a region with its own dialect and a strong tradition of lake-centered rural life. Walking through the villages nearby, visitors can notice old wooden farmsteads and small chapels that reflect how people have lived here for centuries.
The park covers three municipalities, and the rules about what you can do vary depending on the zone you enter. It is worth checking which areas allow hiking, camping, or access to the lake before you arrive.
Lielais Liepukalns, a hill inside the park, is Latvia's third highest point at 289 meters above sea level. On a clear day, the view from the top reaches far across the wooded land below.
