Teiči Nature Reserve, Strict nature reserve in eastern Latvia.
The Teiči Nature Reserve is a large protected area in eastern Latvia covering about 19,779 hectares and contains the largest intact moss bog system in the Baltic region. The landscape is dominated by sprawling peatlands, embedded lakes, and diverse ecosystems.
The territory received protected status in 1982 and was recognized as an internationally important Ramsar wetland site in 1995. These designations ensured long-term conservation of this exceptional ecosystem.
A small community of Old Believers lives on Siksala island, maintaining traditions rooted in centuries-old religious practices. Their presence shapes the cultural character of this remote location within the reserve.
Visitors can access select areas between June and October only with authorized guides, while other zones require special permits. Good preparation and proper footwear are important since the terrain is boggy and often wet.
The reserve contains 18 natural lakes formed within the bog system, supporting a collection of rare plant species that attract few visitors' attention. These water bodies create a distinctive landscape feature found nowhere else in quite the same way.
