Krustkalns Nature Reserve, Strict nature reserve in Madona Municipality, Latvia
Krustkalns Nature Reserve is a protected area in Madona Municipality covering a large expanse with coniferous forests, meadows, lakes, and underground springs. The reserve contains varied ecological zones that form an interconnected network of natural habitats.
The area received protection status in 1977 following extensive research conducted in the 1950s. This scientific work established the foundation for recognizing the site's ecological importance.
Scientists from Latvia regularly conduct ecological studies within the reserve, monitoring 32 plant species and 37 animal species listed in the Latvian Red Book.
The reserve allows access only with special permits, which are primarily granted to researchers conducting scientific work. Visitors should inquire ahead of time, as access is strictly limited.
The underground springs contain high calcium concentrations that create limestone formations. This geological feature allows plant species typically found in coastal areas to grow in this inland location.
