Bērzaune Castle

Bērzaune Castle is a medieval stone fortification on elevated ground in Latvia, with remaining walls that display traditional Baltic defensive architecture from several centuries. The stone structures show different building phases and construction methods from the region's fortress architecture.

The fortress was built in the 16th century as a protective structure for surrounding territories during medieval regional conflicts. It played an important defensive role in this area during that turbulent time.

The ruins are a place where archaeologists regularly uncover objects and building remains from different periods of local medieval life. Visitors can observe the active excavation sites and gain a direct sense of how people lived here centuries ago.

The ruins are located near Bērzaune village and are accessible by road P37, with parking spaces near the entrance. It is helpful to wear sturdy shoes, as the ground is uneven and stones can be slippery.

The walls clearly show how builders gradually transitioned from earlier wooden structures to more solid stone construction over time. This evolution makes the castle a notable example of technological change in medieval defensive architecture.
