Cēsis New Castle, Manor and national architectural monument in Cēsis, Latvia.
Cesis New Castle is a medieval fortress complex in the center of Cesis, consisting of ruined fortifications and a renovated manor house. The site includes several structures from different periods, including a western tower that offers views across the landscape.
The site was founded in 1201 and developed from a wooden hillfort into a stone fortress controlled by the Livonian Brothers of the Sword. Over centuries, it underwent various architectural changes and served under different rulers.
The castle now operates as a center for exhibitions, displaying objects that document Latvia's social development across centuries. Visitors can see how the region changed and what role this site played in that history.
Visitors can explore the grounds with or without a guided tour, with access to multiple areas including the western tower offering views. The visit is pleasant in good weather and comfortable shoes are recommended for climbing stairs and navigating uneven terrain.
In 1577 during the Livonian War, about 300 inhabitants died in an explosion within the castle rather than surrender to enemy forces. This dramatic event remains an important part of local collective memory.
