Kandava Castle

Kandava Castle is a medieval fortress ruin in Kandava that sits on elevated ground overlooking the surrounding countryside. Stone walls and tower remains form the main structures visible today across the site.

The Livonian Order built this fortress in 1254 as a strategic defensive stronghold for the region. It lost its military importance during the Great Northern War and gradually fell into ruins.

You can visit the castle ruins daily by entering through Pils Street where informational panels help you understand the layout and structure. The site is open and easy to navigate in any season, making it a straightforward visit.

Parts of the remaining walls still show original 13th-century stonework that reveals how medieval builders constructed Baltic fortifications. These preserved sections give you a direct look at the craftsmanship of that era.
