Kainji National Park

Kainji National Park encompasses 5,341 square kilometers of savanna woodland, incorporating the Borgu Game Reserve and Zugurma Game Reserve sectors divided by Lake Kainji.

The establishment of this protected area in 1979 marked a significant step in Nigerian conservation efforts, integrating existing game reserves into a comprehensive national park system.

Local communities around Lake Kainji maintain traditional fishing practices while adapting to conservation regulations that protect the park's natural resources.

Visitors can access the park through the Borgu sector from December to June, when wildlife congregates near water sources during the dry season.

The park contains 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 reptile species, including African manatees that inhabit the waters of Lake Kainji.
