Amsterdam-West, Administrative borough in Amsterdam, Netherlands
Amsterdam-West is a borough west of the Singelgracht canal network containing neighborhoods built before World War II. The area comprises several adjoining residential quarters that together form a densely populated residential zone.
The borough formed in 2010 through the merging of four former districts: Oud West, Westerpark, De Baarsjes, and Bos en Lommer. This reorganization brought together long-established neighborhoods under one administration.
The neighborhoods display architecture from the housing reform movement, with 19th-century apartment buildings particularly visible in Frederik Hendrikbuurt. These structures shape the streetscape today and reflect the social ideals of their era.
The area is well served by public transportation and offers plenty of opportunity to walk along canals and through residential streets. It is best explored on foot to discover the distinct architecture and character of each neighborhood.
The area is among the most densely settled residential neighborhoods in Amsterdam and was deliberately planned according to urban reform principles. This intentional design remains visible in the arrangement of houses and street layout today.
