Cadettenschool, Military school building in Alkmaar, Netherlands.
Cadettenschool is a school building in Alkmaar featuring Neorenaissance architecture with red machine-made brick walls, limestone bands, and a symmetrical three-floor central structure flanked by prominent corner pavilions. The structure preserves its original wooden beam floors and original main hall arrangement throughout.
The building was constructed between 1892 and 1893 under the design of architect Johan van Nieukerken, originally serving as a military academy. Around 1930, the structure was repurposed and converted into a municipal hospital.
The entrance displays limestone pilasters decorated with Medusa heads and the national coat of arms, with combat-themed wrought iron anchors visible along the walls.
The building is protected as a Rijksmonument and remains accessible to visitors, though visitors should be aware it functions as an active building. Its location near Alkmaarderhout makes it easy to find and explore the surrounding area.
The building originally featured decorative panels displaying 'CADETTENSCHOOL' text above the main entrance accompanied by military ornaments. These details reflect its initial purpose as a training facility for cadets.
