Gorp en Roovert

Gorp en Roovert is a private estate covering extensive grounds with deciduous and coniferous forests, open heathlands, and several ponds and streams. The landscape mixes woodland with farmland and wetland areas, creating a diverse terrain across the property.

The land originally belonged to the Duke of Brabant before being acquired in 1758 by a notary who constructed a dyke to improve access from the surrounding heathlands. This early development reflects how owners modified the terrain for practical use.

The boundary bridge over the Rovertse Leij features a marker stone from 1843 that shows where two territories meet. Visitors can see how the old road and chapel create a small ensemble that marks this border crossing today.

The grounds are accessible via marked hiking trails that begin from a restaurant location and can be planned using detailed online maps. Visitors should check their route in advance and wear appropriate footwear for the varied terrain conditions.

The Papschot pond harbors rare plant species such as gentian bellflower and serves as home to black woodpeckers and tawny owls. This smaller water body is frequently overlooked by visitors despite its importance to local wildlife.
