Gorp

Gorp is an extensive estate near Hilvarenbeek containing old deciduous and coniferous forests, heather fields, fens, and wetlands across its grounds. The Rovertsche Leij river flows through the landscape, creating distinct habitats with natural meanders and supporting diverse wildlife.

Early records from Brussels rent books mention 'De hoeve van Gorop' as a fief granted by the Dukes of Brabant in the medieval period. This feudal connection shows the area's significance as an organized agricultural territory from its earliest documented times.

The name Gorp comes from 'goor', meaning muddy or marshy ground, reflecting the natural conditions that shaped how people settled here. This heritage remains visible in the landscape, where wetlands and boggy areas still dominate the terrain.

The estate offers several marked hiking trails for visitors of different abilities, ranging from shorter walks to longer routes through varied landscapes. It is advisable to wear sturdy footwear, as the wetland and moorland areas can become muddy and soft underfoot.

The Rovertsche Leij river winds through the estate for about five kilometers, creating a dynamic water system with natural meanders. This flowing presence sustains a range of specialized habitats that are uncommon in artificially shaped landscapes.
