Basiliek O.L. Vrouw van het Heilig Hart is a Neo-Gothic church in Sittard with tall crossing towers topped by pointed spires. The building includes galleries above the side aisles, a choir section with radiating chapels, and distinctive colored brickwork throughout.
Construction started in 1875 using a marble cornerstone from the Catacombs of Saint Callixtus, a gift from Pope Pius IX. The church later received official basilica status from Rome.
The interior displays colorful brickwork and stained glass windows showing biblical figures and saints. These windows shape how the church space feels when you walk through it.
The building is located in central Sittard and is easy to reach on foot from the town center. Visitors should enter quietly and respect the religious nature of the space at all times.
This church was the first building in the Netherlands to receive basilica status from Rome. This recognition in 1883 gave it a special ecclesiastical rank that no other Dutch church had yet obtained.
