Koepelkerk, Arnhem, Protestant church on Jansplein, Arnhem, Netherlands.
Koepelkerk is a Protestant church on Jansplein with an octagonal shape and a dome that rests directly on the outer walls. Eight Ionic columns inside support the structure, while round arched windows pierce the walls.
The church was designed and built between 1837 and 1838 by architect Antony Aytink van Falkenstein. It replaced the deteriorated St. Janskerk, which had been demolished in 1817.
The organ inside dates from 1842 and displays carved details in the Empire style, showing biblical scenes. It remains an active part of worship and concerts, connecting visitors to the musical heritage of the congregation.
The interior underwent renovation in 1976 when the floor was raised about 1.5 meters (5 feet) to create a large gathering space beneath the main hall. Visitors encounter two usable levels, each offering a different sense of space.
The church suffered a direct hit during the 1944 Battle of Arnhem that damaged the organ. Emergency repairs in 1948 allowed the instrument to sound again after years of silence.
