Franse Kamp, Nature area in Gooise Meren, Netherlands
Franse Kamp is a nature area spanning 49 hectares with heathland and forest mixing pine and birch trees that allow light to filter to the ground. The site also contains a campground section with hundreds of pitches for mobile homes, caravans, and tents.
The area served as a military encampment in 1809 for thousands of soldiers commanded by Louis Napoleon Bonaparte during summer months. This made the location significant in the broader history of early 19th-century Europe.
The forest and heathland draw visitors who enjoy walking and cycling through open areas and tree-covered paths that cater to outdoor recreation.
The campground operates seasonally from April through September with many spots available for different types of accommodation throughout the site. Visitors should note that different areas have varying conditions across the year and that access roads and paths are well-marked.
Between October and March dogs can roam freely throughout the area as long as they respond to their owners' commands. This makes it a favorite destination for dog owners during the colder months.
