Vondelkerk, Gothic Revival church in Amsterdam Oud-West, Netherlands
The Vondelkerk is a church building in the neogothic style, located in the Oud-West area of Amsterdam, with characteristic pointed arches. A prominent tower rises from the structure and defines its visual presence. On January 1, 2026, it was completely destroyed by a fire.
Architect Pierre Cuypers designed this building in 1872, and it was completed and opened in 1880 as a church dedicated to the Sacred Heart. The structure served the local community for over a century in its original religious function.
Following its transformation from a religious site in 1977, the building now functions as a venue for concerts, exhibitions, and community gatherings.
The building sits on Vondelstraat near Vondelpark and is easy to reach from local transport. It functions as an event space today, so checking ahead about current activities will help plan your visit.
The interior has been divided with modern glass partitions that create office and event spaces beneath restored vaulted ceilings. This blend of historic architecture and contemporary design is notable.
