Vondel statue

The Vondel statue is a bronze sculpture mounted on a stone pedestal, located at the center of the park and rising about 3 meters high. Architect Pierre Cuypers designed the pedestal in 1867, combining both materials to create a permanent and prominent display.

The statue was installed in 1867 and prompted the renaming of the surrounding green area from Nieuwe Park to Vondelpark. This event marked a turning point in how the park was perceived and remembered by the city.

The statue depicts Joost van den Vondel, a major Dutch playwright and poet whose works shaped European theater and literature during the Golden Age. Visitors can sense his importance through the fact that the park itself carries his name and the central location of this monument within the city.
