Vondelbrug, Fixed bridge in Amsterdam-Zuid, Netherlands
Vondelbrug is a road bridge in Amsterdam that spans across Vondelpark, connecting the neighborhoods on either side. It carries the only vehicle traffic link between Stadhouderskade and Amstelveenseweg in this direction.
Architect Piet Kramer designed the bridge, with construction starting in 1936. World War II interrupted the work, and the bridge did not open to traffic until 1947.
Stone reliefs by artist Hildo Krop decorate the bridge, depicting scenes from the story of Gijsbrecht van Aemstel. These sculptures become part of the everyday landscape for those crossing here.
The bridge is designed for vehicle traffic and links two main roads on opposite sides of the park. Pedestrians can use it as well, though it is primarily oriented toward through traffic.
A former shelter beneath the bridge was converted into the Beatkelder Lijn 3 club in 1968 and hosted performances by major international bands. The space later served as Vondelbunker for cultural events.
