De Prins Van Oranje, Windmill and Rijksmonument in Buren, Netherlands
De Prins van Oranje is a five-story gristmill located at Landstraat 32 in Buren. The structure features a white wooden platform and four sails spanning approximately 24 meters in length.
The mill was built in 1870 and granted national monument status in 1967. It underwent major restoration work in 1968 and again in 1992.
The name refers to the Dutch royal family's historical title Prince of Orange, which originated from a principality in southern France. This connection to royal heritage becomes evident when you enter the building and understand why it bears such a distinguished name.
The mill is open to visitors who can observe the grain processing mechanisms at work. You can purchase freshly milled flour and other products directly at the site.
The building retains its original grinding machinery from the nineteenth century, which converts wind power directly into mechanical energy for processing grain. These still-functioning mechanisms represent craftsmanship that many visitors overlook.
