Built in 1248 by Simon van Haerlem, the castle endured until 1351 when it was destroyed during the Hook and Cod wars after a prolonged siege.
Archaeological investigations in 1960 uncovered a substantial bronze treasure collection, contributing to the understanding of medieval Dutch metallurgy and craftsmanship.
The castle ruins, located 400 meters southwest of Slot Assumburg, are accessible through Hoflaan 2 in Heemskerk for historical research and visits.
Ground radar studies in 2020 revealed an elaborate defensive system with an 8-shaped moat design requiring multiple water crossings to reach the main structure.
