Sjaerdemaslot

Sjaerdemaslot is a fortified residence that featured a main building with upper and lower levels and two distinct towers of different sizes. A drawbridge once crossed the surrounding moat to connect the different sections of the medieval complex.

Construction began in the mid-15th century as a fortified seat for local nobility and wealthy families. The site remained a residence for several centuries before being abandoned and demolished in the early 18th century.

The estate attracted educated visitors and thinkers drawn to the nearby university in Franeker. The surroundings held significance in the intellectual circles of the city during its time.

The former castle grounds are now open to the public as a green space in the city. Visitors can walk freely through the area and observe how the historical location sits within modern Franeker.

A distinctive rounded tower with defensive battlements stood at the northeast corner of the complex. This tower contrasted visibly with the heavier western tower and created an asymmetrical profile that was characteristic of its design.
