Sjûkelân

Sjûkelân is a sports complex in Franeker featuring two 18.6-meter towers designed by architect Rein Hofstra that have defined the grounds since 2003. The facility provides multiple access points and houses amenities specifically configured for hosting major sporting events and outdoor activities.

The land evolved from the site of Sjaerdemaslot castle through agricultural use before establishing itself as a permanent competition venue for kaats games starting in 1856. This transformation reflects the shift from aristocratic holdings to a community sporting facility.

The venue hosts the annual PC-kaatspartij, a traditional Frisian ball game competition that draws athletes and spectators from across the region. This sport remains central to local identity and community gatherings throughout the year.
